Introduction – About the School of Architecture and Planning

The School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) at Sister Nivedita University is Eastern India's flagship institution for architectural education. Founded in 2020, SAP is committed to fostering critical thinking, interdisciplinary discourse, and industry-based practical knowledge. With a focus on contextual and sustainable development solutions, SAP views Kolkata as its primary laboratory for engagement with people, places, and projects. The school boasts of distinguished faculty, offering a multidisciplinary curriculum and integrated pedagogy. Currently, SAP offers a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture (B. Arch) approved by the Council of Architecture (CoA), New Delhi.

BACHELOR DEGREE IN ARCHITECTURE (B. ARCH)

Designed as a curriculum that simultaneously anchors itself in theory and innovates from praxis, the 5-years B. Arch program critically examines subjects ranging from architectural design studios to architectural history and cultural studies, ergonomics to building structures and construction technologies, computer graphics to environmental studies and climatology among an array of other topics. The course is designed to be an immersive, interactive, and hands-on experience for students, through the use of pedagogic methods that include interactive and graphically interpreted design studios, computer applications in design, hands on model making and skills development workshops, audio visual lecture sessions and presentations, visits to construction sites, educational tours to critically observe architecture and culture, primary and secondary research, learning through conferences and workshops, training and placement with an architectural firm for a period of six months, culminating with a design thesis in the final semester.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION

The eligibility criteria for admission to 1st of 5-year B.Arch. degree course for 2024-2025 is as under:

"No candidate shall be admitted to Architecture course unless he has passed an examination at the end of the 10+2 scheme of examination with at least 50 per cent. Aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics and also at least 50 per cent. marks in aggregate of the 10+2 level examination or passed 10+3 Diploma Examination with Mathematics as compulsory subject with at least 50 per cent. marks in aggregate."

FAQs for SNU Hostels:

Q-1) Do SNU have hostel facility for students?

Ans.– Yes.

Q-2) How many hostels do SNU have?

Ans.– The Institution has two  Boys’ Hostels and five Girls’ Hostels.

Q-3) What is the capacity of your hostels for boys and girls?

Ans.– The capacity for girls is 220 and the same for boys is 100.

Q-4) Are there A/C and Non A/c rooms for hostellers?

Ans. – Yes, we have both A/c and Non A/c rooms.

Q-5) What is the process of allotment of seat?

Ans.– Allotment is on the first cum first serve basis, usually, when the number of applicants are more than the number of hostel seats, a waiting list is drawn up and allocation is as per the list and availability arising.

Q-6) Do you have hostel accommodation with attached/ common bathrooms?

Ans.– We have accommodation with both attached and common bathrooms.

Q-7) What is the sharing capacity of rooms in hostels?

Ans.–  We have two seater, three seater rooms for boys and two seater, three seater for girls.

Q-9) What types of facilities do you provide to the hostellers?

Ans.–  Facilities include 24x7 security, 24×7 power back up, 24×7 internet connectivity, laundry, sports facilities, First Aid and medical facilities.

Q-10) Do you have separate mess for girls and boys?

Ans.–  Yes, we have separate mess for girls and boys.

Q-11) How many meals are provided?

Ans.–  Four meals, which includes Breakfast ,Lunch , Evening Snacks and Dinner.

Q-12) What is the quality of food?

Ans.– The university engages mess facilities contract companies each year based on parameters and performance evaluation of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The menu is drawn in consultation with representatives of students and other experienced staff. Highest quality of food is maintained and strict hygiene standards are adhered to.

Q-13) Do you engage the hostellers in other activities also?

Ans.–  To provide a healthy competitive and diverse cultural learning environment ,there are committees for cultural and sports activities. Meets are organized alongside other special occasions regularly. Hostels organise almost all festivals celebrated across the country. The Hostel is a platform for the students to develop all their talents. Hostel Day is organized with variety of entertainment programs. It is indeed a spring board for many to begin well.

Q-14) What type of basic infrastructure has been provided to the hostellers?

Ans.– A basic bed with mattress, study table, chair and cupboard is assured to every boarder with air conditioning / Non AC alongside attached bath / Common facility as opted for.

Q-15) Are there any regulations of timings for the hostellers?

Ans.– Yes, hostellers are expected to finish off their day’s outdoor engagements by 1900 Hrs( 7 PM) during winters and 2000 Hrs (8PM) during summers. The parents/ guardians are expected to inform minimum 2 days in advance through Registered Mobile Number in case of any variation. The institution follows this policy strictly.

Q-16) What is the system or process for hostellers to visit their home town?

Ans.– Every parent/ guardian is expected to register authorized signatures and mobile number at the time of joining the hostel. The parents / guardians are contacted for verification on the listed RMN for any authorized movement of the hostellers.

  Confirmatory calls from Hostel Wardens are made to the guardian for authorizing movement of their wards. The Mobile Numbers of Hostel Wardens are displayed on the Notice Boards. Applications can be moved over e-mail and WhatsApp. Application directly received from hostellers are also shared with parents and confirmation sought.

Q-17) How are the hostellers expected to make sundry purchases for day to day use?

Ans.– We provide college transport once in a month to the hostellers to purchase utility items.

Q-18) If some hosteller falls sick or gets injured, what actions are taken by the administration?

Ans.– We have First Aid Medical Kit available in each hostel. We also run OPD between Monday – Saturday during day time and a Medical practitioner is available to provide free of cost consultation to the hostellers.

We have a 24*7 facility of ambulance to take the ailing patient to the hospital in the proximity of the University. Hostel Wardens are expected to accompany the injured and infirm in ambulance and medical attention delivered according to doctors.

In case of any medical emergency, the parents of the student are contacted immediately to come and take care of their wards.

Q-19) Do you have Medical Insurance policy for hostellers?

Ans.– Yes, all the hostellers are insured for mediclaim including Personal Accident insurance up to a specified value.

Q-20) What about ragging?

Ans.– SNU is a  ragging free zone  in  hostels as well as in Campus. The different committees have been formulated for this purpose. The University has zero tolerance policy strictly in compliance with Honourable Supreme Court /Govt.of India /UGC/ AICTE/ State Gov. Regulations.

Q-21) Can the hostler keep vehicle in the hostel?

Ans.– Yes, the hostler can keep vehicle in the hostel with the written permission from the competent authority.

Q-22) Do you have laundry facility in the hostel?

Ans.–  Yes we have Laundry facility in the Hostel. Facility is provided with nominal charges. Both wet cleaning and ironing are offered.

Q-23) What about the security of our students who are in the hostel?

Ans.– Security Guard: The entire campus is highly secured, so are the hostels. Nobody can enter the hostel without permission as we have deputed 24*7 professional security guards to avoid any untoward incidence.

Electronic Surveillance: The entire campus is under the surveillance of CCTV cameras round the clock.

Visit of Hostel: There are regular rounds of hostel warden in morning and evening sessions. The absentees are followed up and anyone found ill is taken to the hospital, if need be and special care is taken including his/ her meals.

Night attendance: There is Night attendance of all inmates, just before retiring to bed; we have a provision to take attendance of hostellers. Anybody, found missing in the hostel, is immediately brought to the attention of the parents over phone.

 

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for FRRO:

(Foreigner Regional Registration Offices)

  1. Q-1) What is e-FRRO?

Ans.– e-FRRO is online FRRO/FRO Service delivery mechanism for foreign students without requirement of visiting FRRO/FRO Office.

  1. Q-2) Who needs to apply for e-FRRO?

Ans.– All foreign students who desire Visa and Immigration related services in India viz. Registration, Visa Extension, Visa Conversion, Exit Permit etc need to apply for e-FRRO.

Q-3) How to apply for e-FRRO?

Ans.– Foreign students are required to create their own USER-ID by registering themselves online on e-FRRO portal. Afterwards, they are required to apply online through registered user-id for various Visa and Immigration related services in India viz. Registration, Visa Extension, Visa Conversion, Exit Permit etc, without any hassle and obtain the service(s) without coming to FRRO/FRO office. Moreover, once he/she becomes a bonafide SNU student, the concerned Officer will take care of the entire process.

Q-4) Do I need to visit FRRO/FRO office after applying through e-FRRO?

Ans.–No requirement of taking appointment and visiting FRRO/FRO office unless specifically called upon by the FRRO/FRO concerned. Intimation would be sent through sms/email on the registered mobile/email-id.

Q-5) How to make payment?

Ans.– Upon successful uploading of application and documents, the foreign student would be intimated to deposit the requisite fee online, if any, for the service. The fee has to be deposited online through Bank Payment gateway available on the portal. Amount of fee would be intimated through email/sms alerts.

Q-6) How would I get RC/RP?

Ans.– Registration Certificate / Registration Permit, Exit Permit etc would sent by post on the “Address in India” mentioned in the online application form.

Q-7) Do I need Endorsement on my Passport?

Ans.– There would not be any requirement of endorsement on passport. In case, there is any such requirement, you would be intimated by the FRRO/FRO concerned to visit their office.

Q-8) What to do in emergency/exigency?

Ans.– The foreign student can approach the concerned Civil Authority i.e. FRRO/FRO office directly in case of exigency/emergency. Upon satisfaction of the case, the services can also be granted directly at the FRRO/FRO level. Make sure that services granted are electronic and not manual. You may face hurdles at the Immigration Check Posts in case of manual services.

Q-9) What happens if there is delay in fee payment or document uploading?

Ans.– Foreign student would be liable for prosecution/fines as per Indian laws, for any delay in fee payment/document upload/not attending interview etc.

Q-10) Do I need to use my own email-id for registration?

Ans.– Yes. It is mandatory to use personal email ID. Foreign students should use their own email id to ensure data privacy and data security as important communication would be sent to your email.

Q-11) Can I apply for my family members through my own ID?

Ans.– Yes. You can submit applications for your family members from same ID. However you would be required to submit/fill individual online forms for each member of your family.

Q-12) How would I know about status of my application?

Ans.– At every stage of processing, the status of your application would be shared via SMS/Email. You can also track your status by logging into your dashboard through registered Email-ID/Password.

Q-13) In short, what are the procedure to deal with the S-Form and C-Form?

Ans.– Whenever a foreign student arrives in India with Student Visa (not Tourist Visa), then he/she has to fill the C Form within 24 hours of his/her arrival in India which will be provided by the Landlord in India and as per Visa Rule, he/she has to apply for online Registration within 14 days of his/her arrival in India. SNU will provide the S Form as well as Bonafide Certificate. The foreign student has to upload both the C Form and S Form while completing online registration process.

 

FAQs for Bonafide Certificate and SCHOLARSHIPS

 

Q-1) Do SNU provide any private Scholarship facility for students?

Ans.– Yes, once you become a Bonafide student of SNU (Bonafide Certificate will be available at the Registrar’s Office at SNU once you deposit the requisite amount for admission), we do provide SNU Scholarship under the following categories:

  • Chancellor's full scholarship on tuition fee to students securing >95% in CBSE/ISC/Other Boards and to students securing >90% in the West Bengal H.S Exam.
  • 50% scholarship on tuition fee to students securing >85% & ≤95% in CBSE/ISC/Other Boards and to students securing >80% and ≤90% in the West Bengal H.S. Exam.

Q-1) Do we have to submit the anti-ragging affidavit in hard copy now?

Ans.– No, under the current scenario it is not possible. Once you become a Bonafide student of SNU, we will send you the content of the Affidavit via your email and for the time being, both you and your guardian/parent have to accept the same by replying us with an acceptance mail and once the University reopens with its normal activities, you have to submit the same in notarized hardcopy.

 

Q-2) What about ragging?

Ans.– SNU is a ragging free zone in hostels as well as in Campus. The different committees have been formulated for this purpose. The University has zero tolerance policy strictly in compliance with Honourable Supreme Court / Govt.of India / UGC / AICTE / State Gov. Regulations.

You have get the content printed on a non-judicial stamp paper of a minimum denomination of Rs.10/- and get it signed by yourself as well as your guardian/parent and the get the same Notarised and submit the same to SNU.

Q-1) Is there any bus facility from user’s location?

Ans.– Yes, once you become a Bonafide student of SNU, you will be provided the Bus-Route Chart.

Ans.– No, part payment will not be accepted under any circumstances. it must be paid in full for the whole session in advance at the time of availing transport facility.

Q-9) What will be the mode of payment of Transport Fee?

Ans.– Transport Fee is accepted only by Demand Draft/NEFT/Credit or Debit Card

Q-10) What document will be issued to the transport user after depositing transport charges?

Ans.– Initially, a transport fee receipt is issued by the Accounts Dept. immediately after depositing applicable transport fee and after showing the receipt to the Transport Dept. a Transport ID Card will be issued to the student which must be carried by him/her daily at the time of using transport facility.

Q-11) Can the transport facility be withdrawn?

Ans.– No, transport facility can’t be withdrawn except under the following conditions: a) Withdrawal of Admission, b) Availing SNU Hostel Facility.

Q-12) What amount will be refunded, in case of the transport facility is withdrawn?

Ans.– Refund will be as per the Transport Refund Policy, as approved by the competent authority of University, by making the deductions, calculated on the total transport charges for the whole academic session.

Q-13) Is there any Fine and Penalty clause?

Ans.– Yes, it is decided and imposed as per the approval of the competent authority of SNU.

a) In case of default in fee payment, there is a Late Fee Fine, which is charged as per the rate approved by the competent authority of SNU.

b) In case of any indiscipline in or around bus or transport system or campus, disciplinary action along with the penalty as approved by the competent authority of SNU may be levied.

c) In case, the user is found travelling in bus without carrying the valid transport ID Card, he/she may be fined.

d) In case, the Transport ID Card / Fee Receipt is misplaced, Rs. 500/- is charged towards Duplicate Transport ID Card charges and a FIR/ Affidavit on stamp paper duly attested by the Notary Public is required to submit by the transport users with the Transport department.

Q-14) From where the buses can be boarded in the Campus?

Ans.– The buses are parked near Main Gate and can be boarded only from there at the scheduled time. To avoid any inconvenience, users are advised to reach there at least 10 minutes before the scheduled departure of buses. After leaving the campus, buses will not stop midway.

Q-15) In case of bus breakdown on the route, what will be the alternative arrangement?

Ans.– Firstly, the transport department makes the efforts in providing an alternative transport facility, if failed, in rare circumstances, hiring of the public vehicle, at group (pool) at user’s level, may also be the alternative solution at that time on reimbursement basis but with the prior intimation or permission with competent authorities.

Q-16) Do the bus wait at the stop for the student?

Ans.– No, the students are to reach at stop at least 10 minutes before the scheduled stop time.

Q-17) In case of Emergencies, who can be contacted?

Ans.– For transport related emergencies, the Manager Transport of SNU may be called. In case of extreme emergency, Police at 100 may also be called. For Route related emergencies, Bus Coordinator may be contacted.

Q-18) What will be the validity of Transport ID Card?

Ans.– Transport fee is always charged once in full for the whole academic session and it is valid upto the end of the Academic session for which the transport fee is deposited.

Q-19) What is the procedure of registering the transport related complaint / feedback?

Ans.– Students can register their complaint / feedback through email ID of the Transport Manager.

 

FAQs for SNU Student Uniform:

Q-1) Is there any Uniform for students at SNU?

Ans.– Yes, once you become a Bonafide student of SNU, it is mandatory to attend SNU campus with SNU Student Uniform only.

Q-2) Do the Boys and Girls get same Uniform?

Ans.– Yes, they are supposed to collect one Shirt piece, one Trouser piece, two sets of T-Shirt, 1 Tie, one Blazer and one SNU Bag from the Admin Office at SNU campus by showing the Final Admission Fee Payment Receipt. Note: Nursing students will get separate set of dresses as per rules of Indian Nursing Council, Delhi.

Q-1) What are the SNU student registration procedure? What are the documents required for registration?

Ans – Bonafide students will be provided a set of Registration Form from the Registrar’s Office during their Induction and that has to be duly filled up and submitted along with the following documents:

  1. Self-attested Photostat copies of all Marksheets starting from Class X
  2. Proof of Date of Birth
  3. Medical Certificate from registered medical practitioner as per provided format
  4. Anti-ragging undertaking to be executed on a Rs.10/- non-judicial Stamp paper as per provided format

Q-1) How to get an education loan being admitted to SNU?

Q-5) Is a co-applicant for education loan needed?

Ans.– Your parents/ guardian can be a co-borrower as well as spouse in case of a married applicant. The co-borrower should have a steady source of income and a good credit history in order to improve the applicant’s chances of a successful loan application.

Q-7) Is there a maximum limit on an education loan that a lender can disburse?

Ans.– Most lenders have a maximum limit of Rs 10 lakhs to Rs 15 lakhs for studies within India, while the maximum limit on education loans for overseas studies is between Rs 20 lakhs to Rs30 lakhs. In case of some lenders, the applicant can get a higher loan amount sanctioned provided bank-accepted collateral is provided.

Q-8) What is the tenure of an education loan?

Ans.– The average tenure for an education loan is between 5-7 years in case of most lenders. However, some lenders can offer a longer tenure of up to 15 years in case of higher loan amounts.

Q-9) What is the maximum loan amount one can get for overseas studies?

Ans.– Banks generally fund up to 90% of the education expenses as loan and some even provide loans for 100% of education expense. However, the exact loan amount an applicant is eligible for depends on a range of factors including the monthly earning of the parent/legal guardian, the value of collateral provided, the academic record of the applicant and other factors.

Q-10) Is there a margin on education loans?

Ans.– Most education loan providers do not charge a margin on education loans equal to or less than Rs. 4 lakhs. For higher loan amounts of up to 7.5 lakhs, banks and NBFCs have a margin of around 5% i.e. they provide loan amount equal to 95% of the course cost and the rest must be borne by the applicant. In case of higher loan amounts, the lender may decide to set margins on a case by case basis according to internal policies.

Q-11) Does an education loan require security or collateral?

Ans.– The requirement of collateral varies from one bank to another, however, the following is generally the thumb rule:

  • For loans up to Rs. 4 lakh – No collateral or Third Party Guarantee is required.
  • For loans from Rs. 4 lakh to Rs. 7.5 lakh – Collateral is not needed but third-party guarantee is required
  • For loans above Rs. 7.5 lakh – Collateral is required. Some of the key types of collateral accepted by banks include LIC/NSC/KVP, Fixed Deposit held with the lender, property documents owned by the applicant or co-signor.

Q-12) Is the loan disbursed in favour of the borrower or the institute/university?

Ans.– The tuition and hostel fees are disbursed directly to the institute as per their schedule and fee structure usually in the form of a draft. Other components of the loan such as course-related expenses for lab equipment, laptop computer, uniform, travel expenses etc. may be claimed by and provided to the loan applicant.

Q-13) What is employment verification in an education loan?

Ans.– Some banks perform independent verification of the employment records of the loan cosigner, which typically include parent/guardian or spouse (if married) of the student who is applying for the education loan. In case the details provided cannot be verified, the loan application may be rejected by the prospective lender.

Q-14) What is a holiday/interest free/moratorium period? What if there is a break in the study?

Ans.– Each student is given some time by the bank before the repayment tenure starts. This is the time granted by the lender before the repayment begins is referred to as the holiday period. It is usually either 6 months to 1 year after the successful completion of the course, or the time it takes the borrower to start working at a job, whichever is earlier.

If there is a break in the course or the borrower chooses a sabbatical, it is entirely up to lending bank’s discretion on whether to add a few months to the holiday period.

Q-15) Do education loans have any Income Tax benefits?

Ans.– Loan borrowers can avail tax benefits on interest paid on education loan under Sec 80E of the Income Tax Act. This benefit is available over and above the Rs. 150,000 deduction allowed under Section 80C. Tax benefits can be availed once the borrower starts paying the interest on the education loan. Further, the deduction is available until the borrower pays off the full interest amount on the loan or for a maximum period of 8 years, whichever is earlier.

Q-16) Is there a prepayment penalty on education loan?

Ans.– Most banks do not levy prepayment penalty on education loan. However, it is best to check with the bank before signing the dotted line.

Q-17) Is it necessary to have an account with the bank to avail of an educational loan? 

Ans.– Earlier, having an account in the bank from where the borrower was hoping to get a loan used to be an important criterion. Now it is no longer a mandatory requirement. If you have an account with the particular bank, it usually becomes easier to get the loan sanctioned. This is because of your prior relationship with the bank, your past financial records and transactions can be analyzed faster to make a decision.

Q-18) Can a student avail another loan for further studies? When will the repayment of the new loan commence?

Ans.– Yes, this is possible. You can borrow a loan for a bachelor’s degree followed by one for master’s without repaying the first loan. This loan can be taken as a top-up loan against the already existing loan; however, it is subject to the lending bank’s discretion and the internal rules and regulations of the lender.

It will commence as per the new holiday period, which will take effect once the student has joined a new course.

Q-19) Do banks offer an education loan in foreign exchange? I need to pay in dollars for my studies, but the bank is in India.

Ans.– The loan availed by the student is paid to the educational institution directly in the local currency (Dollar/Pounds/Euro etc.). The lender may charge an additional currency conversion fee as per RBI regulations on the loan amount disbursed.

Q-20) Is any incentive available for a girl student applying for education loan?

Ans.– Banks generally provide a 0.5% concession on the applicable education loan interest rate to girl students pursuing higher education in India and abroad.

Q-21) Are there any special privileges for students in the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) category who avail education loans?

Ans.– Yes, eligibility criteria and loan margins on education loan are relaxed for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe students availing education loans in India. The eligibility criteria are lowered from first/second class to pass class for SC/ST category students seeking education loan for graduate and post graduate studies, while, margin money is sometimes lowered than the regular percentage or nil.

Q-22) Do banks consider education loan requests from NRIs?

Ans.– Requests received from NRIs can be considered if:

  • Student is an Indian passport holder and meets all the eligibility requirements
  • Documents such as security or any collateral which is enforceable in India can be handed over to the bank.

Q-23) Why do banks require an insurance policy? 

Ans.– Banks usually prefer that students avail a life insurance policy equivalent to, or more than, the loan amount. The policy acts as a security feature and forms a part of the collateral. In case of the untimely demise of the borrower, the bank recovers the outstanding loan amount from the student’s life insurance policy and the remaining amount, if any, is paid out to the beneficiary of the policy.

Q-24) Is credit score important in case of education loan?

Ans.– A majority of students applying for an education loan do not have previous credit history such as other loans or credit cards. Thus, education loan specialized lenders have a specialized credit scoring model that scores education loan application based on the University, College and the Course of admission. They factor the academic background of the student as well as the credit history of the co-borrower into their decision.

 

Q-25) What are the important documents that I need to provide?

Ans.– You will need to furnish the following documents along with the completed application form. Relevant information would relate to the guardian and the student both, when the loan is jointly taken.

  • Mark sheet of last qualifying examination for school and graduate studies in India
  • Proof of admission to the course
  • Schedule of expenses for the course
  • Copies of letter confirming scholarship, etc.
  • Copies of foreign exchange permit, if applicable.
  • 2 passport size photographs
  • Statement of Bank account for the last six months of borrower
  • Income tax assessment order not more than 2 years old

Q-1) When do I need to obtain a migration certificate?

Ans.– In case, you are changing your affiliating University, then only you need to obtain the Migration Certificate from your previous University and submit the same to the current University. In case you join SNU from a school, you need to submit School Leaving Certificate.

Q-2) How do I obtain a migration certificate?

Ans.– Nowadays you may get it through online. Ypu have to apply online through your previous University portal and by submitting requisite documents and fees, you may get the same.

Q-3) What is the rule for foreign students regarding migration certificate?

Ans.– In case of foreign students, only FRRO registration is enough.
